Your own stretch of the ‘dark river’

The river Wenning takes its name from the Old English for “dark river”, and it is the quiet heart of the estate. Born where Clapham Beck and Austwick Beck spill off the slopes below Ingleborough, it gathers through the dales and runs west past Bentham on its way to join the River Lune. For thirteen private acres it is yours — hundreds of metres of frontage where the water chuckles over rock and boulder and pools deep and still beneath the trees.

Wake to the sound of it. Cast a line from your own bank — the Wenning is a wild brown-trout river, with runs of salmon and sea trout pushing up from the Lune in late summer (an Environment Agency rod licence is all you need). Trace the footpaths that follow the water between Low and High Bentham, watch a heron work the shallows by the weir, or simply pull up a chair, dip your toes, and let an afternoon drift by with Ingleborough on the skyline.

Our nearest wild place, just 2 minujtes away — and the one most visitors never find. The Trough of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, begins barely two minutes from the estate, winding through heather moorland and empty fells. Remote, beautiful and almost entirely yours, it is the perfect antidote to a busy summer in the better-known parks.

Yorkshire Dales National Park

The estate sits right on the border of the Yorkshire Dales — one of England’s most breathtaking landscapes. Step out into open moorland, limestone pavements and dramatic dales. The Three Peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-ghent are within easy reach, with the famous Ingleton Waterfalls Trail just ten minutes away.

Lake District National Park

England’s most celebrated national park is half an hour away. Explore Windermere, Coniston and Grasmere, climb the fells, or simply take in some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Whether you’re a serious walker or after a scenic drive, the Lakes delivers every single time.
